Marlene Dietrich, founding, and long-time, board member and past-president of Abbeyfield in Port Alberni, was awarded the King Charles the 3rd, Coronation Medal. on November the 12th, by the member of Parliament for the area Gord Johns. This joyful event was attended by 20 Residents of the House and about 40 of Marlene’s friends from the community and from other organizations in which she is active. Gord explained to the assembled that this award will be made to about 30,000 Canadians across the country, and he was able to Recommend to the Governor General, the Right Honourable Mary Simon. He pointed out that Marlene will be one of about 20 to be recognized from his large riding, among many who are worthy of the award, selected for their significant contributions to the community and their country.
A letter of congratulations from Joe McReynolds, President of Abbeyfield Canada, was read to the group and presented to Marlene and was much appreciated. Coffee and cake was served and it provided time for Marlene to visit with friends. She planned to spend time with residents the next day to tell the story of saving of this valuable building from the wreckers ball in 2001 and transforming it into the largest Abbeyfield House in Canada.
